There are also some physical factors that can cause a panic attack.  Some of these include exhaustion, lack of food and water, poor sleep habits, getting angry.  All of these things may cause you to have a panic attack.  However, even if you are facing some of these physical challenges, your thoughts are ultimately what impact a panic attack the most.

The fastest way to stop panic attacks is to understand their symptoms.  The symptoms of panic attacks can can be mild or severe with a feeling of helplessness.  In addition, you may have difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, and overwhelming fear. In many instances, sufferers of panic attacks believe that they may be having a heart attack because several of the common symptoms may be similar.

1.  Control Your Thoughts:  Controlling your thoughts is a critical step if you want to stop panic attacks.  Out of control thoughts will force an unwanted reaction that will often lead to rapid breathing, stress, and potentially a full blown panic attack.  If you feel an attack coming on, ask yourself if you are really in a bad situation.  Can you get out of it? Do you really have a need to worry?  In most cases the answer will probably be a firm no.

2.  Preparation:  Being prepared is another way to help stop panic attacks.  A good example is driving in a car.  Millions of people have panic attacks while driving but a large portion of them could be averted with a little preparation.  Some of the things you might do is know your route, have a cell phone handy to call a friend, and avoid traveling at night.  Similar steps can be applied to other situations as being prepared will offer you a better peace of mind.

3.  Learn to Breathe:  Breathing is something we do every day but it can still be difficult for us depending on the circumstances.  A great way to stop panic attacks is to learn how to take long deep breaths when you feel an attack coming.  Slow breathing has been shown to help everything from panic attacks to blood pressure levels.
